Warning from the British Ministry of health Regarding Energy Saving bulbs

These type of bulbs which are called Energy Saving or low Energy bulbs, are very interesting with less power could give more brightly lit. Sure they are very suitable for us.

But behind all the advantages of this bulbs, there was serious danger that could threaten our health even our live if it is broken, if it is broken.

Because it contains Mercury (poisonous) which cause migraine, disorientation, imbalances and different other health problems when inhaled. And many people with allergies, causes them severe skin condition and other diseases just by touching this substance or inhaling it.

Also the ministry warned by NOT cleaning the debris of the broken bulb with the vacuum cleaner, because it would spread the contamination to other rooms in the house while using the vacuum cleaner again.

It must be cleaned through normal broom or brush and be kept in a sealed bag and thrown right away from the house in the bin for hazardous materials.

Protect Your Children from Poisons

By Datuk Dr. Zulkifli Ismail

Young children are most often poisoned by accident through things commonly found at home, such as:

* Medicines
* Kerosene and other volatile fuels
* Detergent
* Bleach
* Fertiliser
* Pesticide
* Paint and solvents
* Mothballs

An ounce of prevention

Poisoning can be prevented through the following safety measures:
* Lock all cabinets containing harmful substances with childproof locks from a reputable hardware shop.
* Do not re-use drink bottles to contain other chemicals like kerosene, bleach, fertiliser or thinner. Even if you re-label the bottles, your child in his curiosity will not read the label and may drink the contents.
* Keep all medicines locked up. n When you take medicines, take them out of children’s sight.
* Tell children that medicine is medicine, not ‘sweets’, and that they are only to take it when you give it to them.
* Don’t leave mothballs loose in cupboards. They are often mistaken for hard candy, with tragic results. If you must use them, hang them in a cloth sachet from the clothes rail where children can’t reach.
* Store all detergents, chemicals, and other potentially poisonous substances more than 1.75 metres above ground level so that children cannot reach them.
* Don’t leave children playing unsupervised.
* Remember that cosmetics and some plants in the garden can also be poisonous.

If anything happens

No matter how careful you are to store the above and any other potentially dangerous poison far out of children’s reach, accidental ingestion can happen. So what can you do when your precious little one encounters something poisonous?

Poison on the skin

What to do:
* Remove child’s clothing
* Rinse affected area with clean lukewarm water
* If skin appears to have been burnt by poison, continue rinsing under running water for at least 15 minutes
* Seek medical attention immediately and take the poison with you

What not to do:
* Use extremely hot or cold water
* Apply ointment or medication, unless directed by doctor
* Scrub the skin

Poison in the eye

What to do:
* Hold eyelid open
* Rinse the eye under running water for at least 15 minutes
* Take child to the nearest hospital with an emergency department and an ophthalmologist

What not to do:
* Use eye drops or eye bath, unless directed by doctor
* “Rub” the eye

Swallowed poison

What to do:
* Take the poison away from the child
* If the poison is still in the child’s mouth, get him to spit it out or use your fingers to remove it
* Induce vomiting only if you are sure the poison is not a volatile substance (eg.Kerosene)
* Collect whatever is spit out, as well as any poison left in the container, and show it to the doctor. Take him to the emergency department as soon as possible because the longer you wait, more of the poison is absorbed into the body.

What not to do:
* Force the child to vomit if you are not sure of the nature of the poison.

In case of emergency…

Don’t underestimate the effects of some common household products on a young child’s body. It may be difficult to be sure if your child has swallowed or touched anything poisonous, but the following may indicate that he has. If your child has any of the following symptoms, bring him to the doctor or emergency ward immediately:
* Sore throat
* Difficulty breathing
* Drowsiness n Irritability or restlessness
* Nausea, vomiting or stomach pain with no fever
* Blisters or burns around the lips and mouth
* Abnormal drooling
* Strange odours on the breath
* Strange stains on the clothing
* Seizures
* Unconsciousness

Useful information

The following will be useful for the doctor or medical personnel to determine how to treat your child:

* What was taken
* Describe the item
* If it was medicine, bring along the container and what’s left in it
* If it was something else, eg part of a plant or a household ornament, bring it to show the doctor
* How much was taken
* When it was taken
* What had been done before taking child for medical attention

The Children ear problems

Ear problems in children may lead to serious damage if |left untreated. Prompt response is the best prevention.

EAR pain is usually caused by infection of the outer or middle ear. Left untreated, ear infections may lead to pus building up behind the ear drum and within the middle ear, causing it to burst and result in hearing impairment.

Inability to hear can affect your child’s speech development, so do take ear infections seriously.

Outer ear infection

The skin on the outer ear canal becomes inflamed, swollen and red if your child has an outer ear infection. He will also experience pain and itchiness inside the ear.

The infection may have been caused by scratches or frequent swimming in chlorinated or unclean water. If your child has eczema, he is likely to get an outer ear infection if water gets into his ear.

The solution:
1. Take your child to a doctor and give him the recommended dose of pain killer to ease the pain.
2. Do not let water get into your child’s ear during baths. Use a sponge to wash his hair.
3. No swimming until the |infection clears up.

Middle ear infection

Most middle ear infections occur with or shortly after a cold. The cold virus spreads from the nose and the throat to the middle ear via a tube called the Eustachian tube.

There may be severe ear pain with rubbing or tugging at the ear, high fever, loss of appetite or even partial deafness.

Discharge from the ear usually indicates that the ear drum has perforated.

The consequences of middle ear infection are persistent ear discharge, impaired hearing and even meningitis (inflammation of the coverings of the brain).

The solution:
1. Consult a doctor as soon as you suspect middle ear infection or if there is a discharge.
2. Do not probe his ear if there is a discharge; just use a clean handkerchief on the ear.
3. Let him rest his head on the affected side so that the discharge can flow out.
4. Do not go swimming.

Preventing ear infections

Is your child prone to ear infections? You may want to discourage him from swimming for a while.

Also, apply menthol drops or rubs when he has a cold to unclog his nasal passages. This cuts down the risk of an infection spreading to the ear. Alternatively, give him nasal decongestants obtained from his doctor.

Another cause of ear infections is the pneumococcus bacteria. Your child can be protected from this infection through immunisation.

Working Safe with electricity

At work, at home, at play and every places, the electricity powers our worlds. Electricity is the most common energy source used today and it is very safe as long as we remember to treat it with respect. As we know that electricity travels at the speed of light abt 186,000 miles per second. And we are aware at this speed, we do not get a warning and there is no time to react.

General Electricity safety tips:

* Keep up to date.
Always keep your home wiring record up to date. As the needs arise, it's important that your
electricity system is capable of handling these changes.

* Inspect regularly.
Whether indoor or outdoor, inspect cords and plugs regularly and replace damaged one.

* Don't overload.
Overloading means overheating and that could cause damage or fire. Also do not exceed the
recommended wattage.

* Extension cords are for temporary use.
If you must use the extension cord, make sure it is of the right capacity for the tools or
equipments. Keep slack in flexible cords to prevent tension on electrical terminals.

* Water and electricity do not mix.
Remember the water and our body are excellent conductors of electricity. If working in wet
surface, make sure the tools are equipped with circuit breakers and your body is well protected
by wearing rubber boots.

* Lock out accidents.
Whenever a repair is in place, unplug tools and equipments from the electricity source. Always
follow the lockout, tagout and grounding procedure to avoid accident.

* Wear protective clothing.
Always use insulated tools in areas where there are possible electrical hazards.

* Safety with tools.
Immediately remove tools in appliances for service if it causes shock, smokes, emits strange
odours, sparks or otherwise operate in suspicious manner.

If an accident happens, stay calm and think wisely.

- Should someone is injured by electricity, do not touch them before you sure that their body is
out of contact with electricity.

- Look for an insulator or insulated type material eg. wooden pole/stick, rubber to break the
contact the body and the electric source.

- Assess the severity inflicted, apply immediate rescue procedures if applicable otherwise seek
medical assistance immediately.

- Inform the person incharge of the accident and request for the electric supply at that particular
area to be cut off instantly

- Have the affected wiring, equipment or tools throughly checked by qualified electrician before
work can be resume.
